“Hunger of the heart is fed well by American cheese slices buttered with Nutella.”

Nutella, for the uninformed, is a hazlenut spread a bit like sweet chocolately peanut butter (IMO).

I had a friend who, when homesick for nebraska, rhapsodized about deep fried grilled cheese sandwiches. Yep, take your standard grilled cheese sandwich, dip it in batter and pop it in the deep fryer. I’ve also been startled recently by stories of mounds of deep fried pickles and krispy cremes coated with frosting with an extra side of frosting for dipping.

In college with used to make scotch sundays… vanilla ice cream with a glass of scotch poured over it. I’m sure I’ve got quality time in hell schedualed for that one.

It suddenly occurs to me I’m overdue for a good binge.

The range of comfort foods, particularly from the US South, is always amazing. Ever seen deep-fried Snickers bars? Of course, in Arkansas, where my in-laws live (they’re not from there!), you pass houses selling “homemade mustard and gunpowder.”

And the joy of marshmallow fluff… My mother never let me buy it, so it wasn’t until I was eighteen and had moved away from home that I got my first taste of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter, or, in extreme decadence, marshmallow fluff and nutella… Only now, after recovering from my ramen years (the nadar after one’s halcyon days, or something) have I started to consciously pass over junk food in favor of brown rice and tofu… (only I’ve just re-discovered the joy of REAL ramen from the Asian stores, so it may be downhill again)
