John Baldessari is speaking this monday and so i did a search for him, and found this site that opens up in such a lovely way. i recomend you try it. it’s actually pleasurable to navigate as a pure act of navigation. odd.

sad the site hasn’t got any images of his work, tho.

I thought the Flash mind-map thing was kind of cool initially, but the whole site sucks.

I have no idea who this guy is from his site. There are absolutely NO links on any of the second-level pages that I could find. It’s just a big honking list of articles and exhibitions…yawn.

Actually putting examples of some of his work or maybe even some of his thoughts online might be more interesting to folks unfamiliar with his work – and probably even for folks who ARE familiar with his work.

From a design standpoint, even the mind-map could use some improvement – for example it might be good to indicate which branches can be expanded.

I tried the site but after an initial warning box that ActiveX controls were turned off, the page was completely blank. I imagined walking by a cool river in the forest primeval, the leafy forest roof hundreds of feet above.

It was a very peaceful navigation experience, because in my imagination there were no mosquitoes.

What can I tell you– it’s a nice moment (assuming technology) in the middle of a bad use of the web. It’s kinda like where there is a great performance in the middle of a poor movie.

I agree the site does not accomplish it’s purpose at all. But the tree is well done, the speed and elegance with which it opens and arranges itself is still lovely.

It remembers me of Marlon Brando in Last Tango in Paris: Brando and the lights made the whole of the movie, and I can’t think of that movie being worth anything without Brando. And yet, with Brando, that becomes one of the best and most moving movies ever made and out there.

“It’s kinda like where there is a great performance in the middle of a poor movie”

Well, this was not a comment on that website though, but a comment on a sentence which commented a comment to a website comment.
