Wow, I didn’t realize people are still pondering the What Is An IA question so heavily! But here’s how I see it: what is often thought of as IA is actually user-interface design, which, now that the web is evolving and sites are becoming more application-like and business is think in terms of what is the best technology solution (if any) rather than what is the best internet solution, is becoming the in demand skill. I’ve seen several job postings (yes, they’re out there) that seek out IAs, but IAs with true application design experience. They actually want to clarify this before they call you for an interview. In other words, the term IA muddied the job market and people are now realizing that what they now are seasoned UI designers, people with client/server or other application design experience. Suddenly an IA is not just an IA.
