Triplettes de Belleville, Les (2003)

loved it loved it loved it and can’t stop listening to the title song. Don’t worry about subtitles– there are almost no words. And you don’t miss them. Strange weird not-for-kids animation; compelling story, bizarre vignettes and ultimately delightful overall.

Of course, with a movie this odd, your mileage may vary.

“…swinging Belleville rendezvous…” Outstanding and unsettling. And, of course, drawn by hand(s), which is a rarity these days.

=v= It’s bikes and old ladies versus cars, frogs, and red wine! So you see, I have every reason to be conflicted about this movie, yet I give it an enthusiastic six thumbs up!

The opening scene is a tribute to the Fleischer Bros.: Les Triplettes improve on the Andrews Sisters, vengeful carnivorous shoes run amok, and, in a decades-belated comeuppance, Josephine Baker turns tuxedoed white men into chimps.

The rest of the movie is a romp, with due homage to Jacques Tati and Winsor McKay, and some echoes of Richard Condie. Plus it’s very much its own creation, a new blossoming of incredible computer animation skills. Every now and then, amidst all the boring glam and chrome, someone comes along and uses the power of computers for something new and unexpected, and this is one of those times.

The fancy stuff is warm, not cold, not just eye candy, but impressively overpowering right where it ought to be. And understated yet still impressive where it ought to be, too. It’s used perfectly and expansively for the story. A MUST SEE! GO WATCH IT NOW BEFORE I START SHOUTING! Oh. Oops. Sorry.
