    what a great article. It has always bothered me to no end that we have been forced to use Arial – as if it is in the league with Helvetica – because of the pervasiveness of Windows. It is also unfortunate that there are some even better, more interesting, more flexible sans serif types (Univers, Myriad MM) out there that no one will ever know about because they don’t come with computers. It is one of the unfortunate side effects of the digital age… 🙁

    On the bright side is the cheapness, and that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Years ago MacWorld had a summary of the font wars. What I remember from that was that Adobe was charging very high prices on postscript fonts (in the late 1980s). Microsoft helped break the monopoly by backing True Type.
