What is Gleanings?

Gleanings is a newsletter full of stuff I find online and on the various mailing lists I'm on. It will not be prettily formatted (plain text only), it will have a lot of bay-area specific stuff in it (such as interesting bay-chi meeting announcements), it will not come out at regular intervals (could be daily, could be weekly, could experience long unexplained periods of silence...) there will be no ads in it, and at no point will it stay on topic.

It's easy to subscribe and unsubscribe, so feel free to try it out!

OPENING THANG

I have to apologize that the gleanings have slowed, and warn that they are going to slow even further for a bit-- we're in countdown to Philippe mode: 3 days to a husband!

IA MATTERS

Lou wonders what are the skills an IA must possess.

USABILITY MATTERS

Where Should You Put the Links? A Comparison of Four Locations
"participants indicated that they believed that embedding the links within a document made it easier to navigate, more easily recognize key information, promoted comprehension, and was easier to follow the main idea of the passages while searching for specific information"

also check out their studies on font sizes and layouts.

This Week's Agenda: The Usability Industry
Michael Roberts takes off where Nielsen leaves off.

His company

"With ‘usability’ gaining greater visibility, this is a good time to implement a user-centered design process. This article looks at ways that the approach and techniques of such a process can be applied to the task of introducing a new process."

several other interesting papers here on both IA and usability

How Much Information
This study is an attempt to measure how much information is produced in the world each year.

This appears to me to be an excellent way to waste time.
