Ziya points out Fortune.com – Alsop on Infotech – Hollywood’s Latest Flop

“It’s clear that the studios’ motivation in designing MovieLink is fear of piracy. But they forgot to make the service usable, appealing, or compelling. So MovieLink will fail, people will argue that you can’t sell digital content on the Internet–and the studios will have proved nothing. ”

Well, somebody had to do it.

Movielink is the latest in a long line of failed movie-on-demand services. Everybody wants to be the winner, but they still don’t understand.

Personally, I think it’s a solution in search of a problem.

What’s amazing is that NetFlix is succeeding where all these services are failing. And think about it, to use Alsop’s trip-to-blockbuster metric, in the 3 days it takes to get your next NetFlix movie, you could make 288 roundtrips.

Everybody thinks the secret to movies-on-demand is immediacy. But it isn’t. It’s selection and convenience. That’s why Netflix and Tivo are winning where others have failed.

My humble opinion. It’s worth what ya paid for it.
